Hi Bill, thanks once again. I was up at the Canal earlier this week and saw both Great Spotted and Green Woodpeckers near the Canal Centre. Very difficult to photograph though, didn't get anything decent on that occasion unfortunately.

I will let you know when the woodpeckers are around, PS haven't seen the Herron in a while but they nest earlier than any other bird in Briton , in late Jan-or Feb? I think, so if I see it nesting I will also let you know as I walk along the cannel 2 or 3 times a week

Hi Dom, thanks for your comments. I'd have to disagree about going soft with the 1.4x on, I've got some very sharp results at full extension with the 1.4x fitted, and that's without any need to downsize. It may require a little more diligence but it certainly is possible. Thanks for the Lightroom tip, will have to give it a try. The thought of reprocessing all my shots fills me with dread, but if its as good as you say I know I would have to do it!

As you say the 100-400 is sharpest around f/8 but I also restrict it to around 350mm - goes increasingly soft beyond that. I wouldn't let the 1.4x anywhere near it I have to say - very soft unless you're downsizing and sharpening for low-res web use. You can get it to autofocus in Live View but only useful if tripod-mounted. It's a good flexible lens but at the long end the 400 prime is superior I believe. Try Lightroom 3 luminance noise reduction btw - bit of a revelation and you might find yourself re-processing your entire collection...

Something that might help you in the future, there is a street portrait artist on YouTube called ,yvadmil, there are 300 artists working on that street called the place du tertre, many of them do portraits mearly as income to fund their ambitions to become well known artists, It would be very prestigious to mention any involvement you might have with these Montmartre artists, and they like me need good inspiration and beautiful photos, and many themselves are photographers , you might find a market for your photos ,and other photographers who share ideas who are in the cutting edge of photographic art from Paris , or now someone who is, yvadmil might be a good person to know, just as a contact, if you would like to aim in that direction in the future ,

In the past I have seen long tailed tits at the crematorium in aldershot near the lido , I even see them in my garden at times as I back on to a forest , I also see green woodpeckers outside my house quite regularly, at one point on my garden wall there was 4 young chicks all in a line, the adults seem to come every day for a week of two, and then disappear but return on odd occasions .It may interest you that just beyond Mitchet lake there is a large house opposite And behind, where they have glowing trees I have counted 18 in total , from behind that house in the woods you can see 5 of these in a row all different colors glowing and mixing together, it may make a very odd photo, but there would be no panoramic view just the foliage glowing and colors merging , you would have to be there at night
